Shampoo Bar Success
When I began using All Natural Shampoo Bars I wasn't certain I liked how my hair felt afterward. After a few washings I saw a real change though. It was as if my hair had undergone a metamorphosis. I loved what the Natural Shampoo Bars did for my hair. The body, shine and softness are unsurpassed; but I wondered why the first week my hair was sticky and just "weird". I began doing some research into the possible reasons why this had happened and this is what I discovered.
Did you know that commercial liquid shampoos and conditions contain synthetic silicones and silica (sand) that coat your hair to make it "feel" good but that leave a chemical residue in your hair? Synthetic silicones are derived from polymers which are soft, plastic, gel-like substances are hard to remove from your hair and scalp. The detergent shampoos with with loads of SLS are also very good at stripping EVERYTHING (even those natural oils we want).
You need to give the shampoo bars about a week to rid your hair of the old residues from your commercial shampoo. During this process your hair may feel stiff or sticky - Don't give up! It's worth the effort. Since our shampoo bars are mild and don't contain chemical detergents or degreasers like SLS, it may take a few days for the shampoo bar to strip off these excess chemicals.
To speed up the process you can do a baking soda or vinegar rinse. For the Baking Soda Rinse 1TBSP baking soda to 1 cup warm water. For the Vinegar Rinse use 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar to 3 parts warm water. Work it into the scalp and let it sit for a while, then RINSE, RINSE, RINSE! We will be offering herb infused vinegar hair tonic recipes for periodic use to get rid of any residue and build up. Stay tuned as this is an ongoing process!
Because shampoo bar soaps do not strip hair in the same way as detergent based shampoos, you may notice your wet hair feeling different after washing than you may be accustomed. This is perfectly normal, you'll love how your hair feels after it dries. And remember, the key to beautiful All Natural Hair is to rinse...rinse...rinse!
Not the right shampoo bar for your hair:
This the most common problem for those new to our shampoo bars. Each of our shampoo bar selections is made with a unique recipe and contains a different blend of natural plant oils, essential oils, and herb infused oils. No two recipes are the same. Likewise each person's hair and scalp is unique and will react differently.
Our best suggestion is to try samples. Use them one at a time so that you can really judge how they make your hair and scalp feel. We often tell customers to take notes on what they like or don't like about each soap or shampoo bar. You may have to experience a few shampoo blends to find the right fit for your hair.
